Rahmat, Mahasiswa Sekolah Tinggi Agama Islam Negeri (STAIN) Majene Prodi Tadris Bahasa Inggris (TBI) semester 5 sekaligus penerima beasiswa MORA Overseas Student Mobility Awards (MOSMA) di Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) membagikan pengalamannya tentang General American Value pada mata kuliah Cross Cultural Understanding (CCU) melalui zoom meeting pada Sabtu, (28/10/2023).
Adapun partisipan yang bergabung dalam zoom meeting tersebut sebanyak 37 orang yang terdiri dari mahasiswa dan beberapa dosen dari prodi TBI.
Dosen Pengampu mata kuliah Cross Cultural Understanding , Rina Marliana menyampaikan tujuan diadakannya sharing session.
“Tujuan diadakannya sharing session tentang American Culture yaitu agar mahasiswa TBI bisa mendengarkan pengalaman seseorang yang telah bersinggungan langsung dengan budaya Amerika,” ujarnya.
Dalam sharing session tersebut, Rahmat membagikan daily life nya di United State of America (USA) sebagai mahasiswa Indonesia.
“Untuk daily life ku sama seperti di Indonesia bangun jam 6 pagi lalu berangkat ke kampus. Setelah pulang dari kampus, saya juga mengerjakan tugas,” ungkapnya.
Lebih lanjut, ia juga membagikan culture shock yang dialami selama di Amerika.
“Ada banyak sekali culture shock yang saya alami. Mulai dari tingginya biaya kuliah dan juga biaya hidup yang ada di Amerika. Selain itu, mahasiswa yang ada di RIT lebih individualis dan disini juga pembelajarannya paperless . Mahasiswa di RIT juga menggunakan pakaian yang kasual yang sangat berbeda di Indonesia,” tuturnya.
Diakhir, Rina Marliana juga mengungkapkan harapannya agar mahasiswa TBI bisa semakin open minded dengan budaya lain.
“Harapan saya, semoga mahasiswa TBI semakin open minded terhadap budaya lain bukan hanya dari budaya di Indonesia, tetapi juga budaya yang ada di negara lain sehingga jika ada kesempatan untuk berkunjung ke negara lain, mahasiswa TBI yang telah mempelajari mata kuliah Cross Cultural Understanding ini tidak lagi mengalami culture shock,” harapnya.
